The construction of Place des Martyrs station, close to the UNESCO-listed casbah, has yielded remains from the city's Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and French periods. The tunnel has been relocated to a depth of 35 m. Archaeologists have since discovered well-preserved coins, weapons, a public building paved with 5th century mosaics, a large 7th century Byzantine necropolis and parts an Ottoman-era mosque. Half of the metro station space will be turned into a museum [27].
